Rheumatology is a medical specialty that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of various disorders related to the musculoskeletal system (muscle-bone system) and connective tissue.

This field of medicine encompasses a wide range of diseases that affect the joints, muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments and other components of the musculoskeletal system, as well as the connective tissue that supports various parts of the body.

What are rheumatic diseases?

Pain that occurs in the joints, muscles, connective and soft tissues can be the result of various forms of arthritis, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis and other systemic diseases.

Rheumatic diseases include all painful conditions of the locomotor apparatus, the spinal column, the joints of the extremities, as well as the surrounding tissues: muscles, tendons and bones.

Rheumatic diseases are common, they usually have a chronic course, they are accompanied by pain, often unbearable, with a tendency towards deterioration and loss of function, leading to partial or complete disability.

Rheumatic complaints can arise due to degenerative changes in the locomotor apparatus or rheumatic inflammation.

Degenerative changes and inflammation of the spinal column are frequent side effects of pain and neurological symptoms due to compression: of the spinal cord and the nerve roots that come out of it, various bone diseases, especially osteoporosis, endocrine, hematological and metabolic disorders, bone and soft tissue tumors, microorganism infections, inflammation small and large blood vessels can be the cause of pain and imitate rheumatism.

A common cause of discomfort (pain and swelling) is inflammation of muscles and tendons, especially at the points where they attach to bones.

Rheumatic diseases can be accompanied by various visceral manifestations (heart, lungs, digestive tract, kidney, urogenital apparatus, eyes, central nervous system, peripheral blood, blood vessels).

General characteristics of rheumatic diseases: pain, limited mobility of the joints, swelling of the joints, deformations of the joints, loss of body weight, episodes of unexplained elevated temperature indicating the onset of systemic diseases and local latent infections, damage to peripheral nerves accompanied by pain, paraesthesia, numbness, hyperesthesia, muscle weakness and tendon-muscle reflexes, less often with flaccid paresis.

Degenerative rheumatism of peripheral joints

  • Osteoporosis of the knee joint or gonarthrosis and hip or coxarthrosis
  • Osteoarthrosis of the finger joints – Heberden’s and Bouchard’s nodules
  • Rhizarthrosis of the thumb, less often osteoarthrosis of the elbow and shoulder joint – omarthrosis
  • Degenerative changes in the spinal column: discopathy, disc herniation, dyskartosis

  • Problems due to the development of tumors

A professor and specialist in the field of rheumatology, guided by his vast experience and the most modern achievements in this field, performs examinations, diagnostics and determines the necessary therapy in the Neuromedic polyclinic.
Of the diagnostic methods, the most significant is the application of ultrasound at the level of joints, muscles and soft tissues, and of the therapeutic methods, the intra-articular injection and thus the treatment of pain.

What does a rheumatological examination include?

  • Clinical application of musculoskeletal ultrasound
  • Joint punctures (arthrocentesis)
  • Intra-articular and pari-articular injections
  • Viscosupplementation

The most common symptoms of rheumatological diseases

  • Pain in bones, joints and muscles
  • Pain in the back
